July 12, 2011 - Members of AFSCME gathered at several places around the state to picket Governor Pat Quinn's decision to withhold raises to 30,000 state workers. Governor Quinn says the General Assembly did not appropriate the necessary funds but AFSCME says he could have asked for appropriations later in the year to make up for the raises that were agreed upon through collective bargaining. Currently and arbitrator is reviewing both sides of the argument.

Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford's office is opening the state vault to the public for tours. It once housed the states cash and valuables but now the vault holds the public's unclaimed property that can be redeemed by contacting the Treasurer's office. To take tours of the vault, call 217-558-4796 or email sjohnson@treasurer.state.il.us

Vault tours are available July 11th through the 15th.

The Greek government has voted in favour of a new round of austerity cuts - securing the next multi-billion instalement of cash from the EU and staving off a default. But furious protesters have reacted violently to the vote, with battles between police and demonstrators continuing just meters from Parliament. Scenes from downtown Athens resemble a warzone - as protesters fought with riot squads amid volleys of tear gas. Hundreds of thousands of people nationwide walked off their jobs for a two day strike against the austerity cuts
